About This Blog
I am a sociologist, and so I tend to think of how individuals are affected by their positions in society or the roles they have in society. I use terms like class or race. I especially like to think about how cultural values influence our decisions. When looking at issues, I tend to downplay economic, psychological, or even biological explanations. They have their place (I am especially interested in biological explanations) but I tend to look at social context first.
I tend to privilege issues related to technology, cultural trends, and racial issues, but really anything goes. This is not a completely self serving project. As I watch many of the major issues being debated over the airwaves and on the ‘net I notice that these issues are always being addressed as if they can all be solved through economic, legal, or technological means. I think this is a mistake. Many of the problems in our society can be informed and sometimes even solved when we recognize the social context upon which we live and how this affects individual choice. This blog is my way of forcing myself to articulate sociological understanding to today’s problems. If a few people happen to read this blog then all the better.
